Abby got out of surgery about noon. Dr Jane feels that it was successful. The fat that the cord was tethered to was encasing her dura. He removed the fat that he could and detethered the nerves. Abby has had a rough time coming out of the anesthesia. She is generally disoriented and vomiting due to the pain medication. We are in the PICU for the night. Our nurse is great and is doing everything possible to keep Abby as pain free as she can. Abby has been moving all around so she is definitely doing well, all things considered.
From here, the concern will be making sure there is no leakage of spinal fluid and making sure that the wound is healing properly.

Our adventure started in February, so if you want to read from the beginning, that is where you should start. While Abby's diagnosis falls under the heading of Spina Bifida, this could not have been prevented by folic acid the way myelomeningocele spina bifida can be. Ken and Eileen, I'm sure it's been a very long day. So glad to hear that Dr. Jane believes it was successful. Hopefully Abby's vomiting will stop and the pain will be well controlled. Sending up prayers for a speedy and complete recovery! See you next week. :)
Prayers have surrounded all of you all day and will continue. I feel good about the news you are reporting so far. I am praying that you guys will stay energized and focused and get some rest--how could that possibly happen.
